There are many reasons why you may want to start a conversation with a stranger. You could be bored and want to speak to someone, you may be single and want to chat to another person of the opposite sex, or you might just like chatting. Whatever your reasons, here is a simple guide on how to get a conversation going for a while.
Tip 1 Ask how was there day?
I find opening with,
"Just finished for the day?" will solicit an answer in most cases. Or,
"Are you on your lunch break, does your firm give you time off for lunch?"
Usually works pretty good. You normally get a good answer from that.
Tip 2 Ask what they do for work
"What do you do for work?"
When they answer ask them do they:
a) Like their work; b) Is it their chosen profession; c) What would they like to do for work if it is not their chosen profession.
Tip 3 Tell them not to mind you, you just like chatting to people and filling the time.
Around about this time they might be worried about you wanting to know about them. Tell them you like to fill your time chatting to strangers and you find that you learn a lot by speaking to strangers. Ask them if they mind speaking and if it is okay to continue. If they say yes, continue with;
Tip 4 Ask them what they do to relax and enjoy themselves
"What do you like to do when you having fun outside of work?"
or
"What do you do for fun?"
This seems to open people up. Ask as much as you can about this to keep them talking.
Tip 5 Ask them if they are single or married with children
"Are you single or are you married with children?"
This gets them talking also. Ask as many questions as you can think of.
After this line of questioning end pause. And watch the tide turn. Soon enough with enough pause, the stranger will feel uncomfortable and ask you a question and now it is time to tell them all about your life. This is your chance to show them what sort of person you are.
This format has worked for me thousands and thousands of times, and was taught to me simply just like this.
If at any time the person makes it clear that they do not want to continue talking with you, please respect their wishes.
I pray you have much success.
