The Father only wants us to have the best. He is a Holy Father and a loving Father and a better Father than the ones that we had on earth. He doesn't give us bad things when we ask for good things. He is not a harsh God sitting up there ready to hurt us if we ask for the wrong thing. He only gives us what is best for us.
OUR TEXT
Matthew 7:9-11 (New King James Version)
9 Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
Some of us in this life have grown up with parents either one or both of them that are not the best parents and whose behavior scars our idea of who God the father is.
I grew up with a very angry father. If something was happening that he did not like he would snap and shout in anger for it to stop. If you disagreed with him and continued to hold your ground, you would be shouted at, and if you continued to say that he was wrong you would get a belting with a strap.
I grew up with a fear of my father and fear in my life of all men.
But I was very well looked after with clothes that were pretty cool and my meals were cooked by a mother that loved me and tried to compensate by lavishing love on me and the others.
When it came to what I wanted most times I got it. Even from a father that was an angry father, I got a bike and presents and the things that I desired in a large part.
Jesus says if our father can give us what we want and he is a sinner, how much more will His father give us who is pure love.
I have to confess to you readers that I do not often ask for things from God. Yet many times people ask me to pray for them and my prayers are answered. For three years I had the gift of prophecy and could walk up to total strangers and give them a profound message off God.
Then all of a sudden the ability to approach total strangers stopped. This brought a deep sadness as I know God had told me that every person I spoke to would one day become a Christian from a seed that I had planted.
The ability to give strangers a message off God stopped for over two years until one day I read a book called prophetic fishing which is all about what I was doing with the strangers. After I read that book a real desire flooded upon me and when I left my house that day I asked God could I have my gift back to talk to strangers and could I have a couple of divine appointments when I was out. True to these verses we have been covering, God came through and my gift came back.
I was shocked and kind of wondered would I have received the gift back sooner if I had boldly petitioned God beforehand.
Paul says that the best gift is the gift of prophecy and says we should all covet the gift. In Revelation it says the Spirit of Jesus is the Spirit of prophecy. I firmly believe that all people who are prayed for by an anointed prophet can have the gift of prophecy.
But that is just an example of a gift. There are many good gifts that the Father gives us if we ask for them. James says we can ask for wisdom and get that in abundant measure.
Every person is given gifts at birth. Things that they can as they grow up just do very easily and naturally. Some people are gifted artists, some are designers, some are born with wonderful voices and others with a gift for music. Every gift that comes to us from birth can be improved with practice and study but these are not the gifts that Jesus is talking about here.
Jesus is talking about extra gifts and talents that can be ours for the asking. We just have to step out by faith and ask.
Be Blessed
